Why NaoH used in water system

Sodium hydroxide used for pH maintaining I know. but my question is NaOH dosing effect on the membrane life.

Ideally the NaOH dosing unit is installed after the first R.O membrane or before storage tank.
NaOH is used as basic material for membrane cleaning agent also.
