ADL & R&D difference in pharma industry

Is R&D & ADL department same in pharmaceutical industry?
What is role of same department in pharma industry?

ADL refers to Analytical Method Development Laboratory. While R&D is a general term used for Research & Development activities. It could be product development (whether API or formulations or even a basic research etc.)

ADL could be a part of R & D OR it could be a separate section / Department in a large pharma unit. In a small or medium-scale pharma company, with a medium budget of (lesser activities or products) related to R & D, then in that case ADL is a part of R & D.
Both R & D and ADL are complimentary functions as their activities are often interrelated.
